CrimeReports.com, the leading provider of online crime mapping, anonymous tipping and crime analytics tools, today announced the launch of a complete suite of community collaboration and crime fighting tools in collaboration with the San Jose Police Department and Logitech (SWX: LOGN) (NASDAQ: LOGI). The newest release from CrimeReports.com is an online social utility called Neighborhood Central that facilitates a secure dialogue between citizens, community groups, businesses and law enforcement about local crime activity and community policing. The service creates opportunities for users to take an active role in protecting themselves and their communities, allowing them to easily create map-based neighborhood groups online, and then collaborate with neighbors and leverage existing social networks to contribute and share localized, community safety-related information. The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC), in the Department of Justice's Office for Justice Programs, plans to award up to $750,000 over three years in funding dedicated to helping American victims of domestic violence overseas. This is the first year OVC awarded the funding. The funding will be awarded to the Americans Overseas Domestic Violence Crisis Center which will serve as a demonstration site to provide comprehensive services to American citizens who are victimized by domestic violence while living abroad, including on military bases. The project will identify promising practices and lessons learned, and will publish a series of bulletins for the victim services community. The organization was awarded the initial $250,000 in Fiscal Year (FY) 2010. Full release

Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) hosted a Suicide Survivor and Bereavement Leadership Summit, which brought together 20 of the nation's leading caregivers, researchers, and pioneers in the field of suicide grief support to discuss how to better help people bereaved by suicide in communities across the United States. A key conclusion reached at the Summit was that current services fall far short of meeting the needs people face after a loved one dies by suicide. Participants agreed that these needs could be better met if the top priority of organizations that work with people bereaved by suicide was helping survivors cope with their grief. Full release

Building upon the extensive testing and protocols already in use by federal, state and local officials for the fishing waters of the Gulf, NOAA and FDA have developed and are using a chemical test to detect dispersants used in the Deepwater Horizon-BP oil spill in fish, oysters, crab and shrimp. Trace amounts of the chemicals used in dispersants are common, and levels for safety have been previously set. Experts trained in a rigorous sensory analysis process have been testing Gulf seafood for the presence of contaminants, and every seafood sample from reopened waters has passed sensory testing for contamination with oil and dispersant. Many of 1.3 million Haitians living in crowded displacement camps could be back in safe homes within 12 months to 24 months, says earthquake structural engineer and post-disaster expert Dr. Kit Miyamoto. Working with the Pan American Development Foundation, in cooperation with the Haitian Ministry of Public Works (MTPTC) and the UN's Office for Project Services (UNOPS), Miyamoto and a MTPTC team of 250 specially trained structural engineers are wrapping up the most comprehensive inspection of 400,000 homes in the capital.
