Zipcar Estimates Global University Car-Sharing Membership Could Reach Millions, Saving 20+ Billion Dollars and Reducing CO2 Emissions by 6.5 Billion Tons per Year
October 14, 2009As hundreds of thousands of students returned to campus this fall, their school provided them with a set of wheels - Zipcar - in addition to room and board. Driven by approximately 75 percent growth year over year in the university segment, Zipcar already is on or near more than 140 campuses in North America and Great Britain, serving a total student population of more than one million in 25 cities, states and provinces. Based on current membership levels and using data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Zipcar estimates that its university programs currently reduce carbon emissions by nearly 56 million pounds annually, which is the equivalent emission of over 4,800 passenger vehicles. Extending the methodology used in a Zipcar global car-sharing study earlier this year, university car sharing has the potential to save more than 20 billion dollars for students and universities, and reduce CO2 emissions by 6.5 billion tons per year.
