Senate Foreign Relations Committee to Hold Hearing Thursday on Global Crisis of Violence Against Women
October 1, 2009The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hear testimony on Thursday to support groundbreaking legislation that addresses the global crisis of violence against women and girls. Amnesty International praised Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) for their commitment to the International Violence Against Women Act and urged reintroduction of the bill, which would apply the force of U.S. diplomacy to fight violence against women in selected countries. Violence, abuse and exploitation of women has reached epidemic proportions, with the United Nations Development Fund for Women estimating that at least one of every three women globally -- nearly a billion women -- will be beaten, raped, mutilated or otherwise abused during their lifetime.
