A new poll by WorldPublicOpinion.org finds that the public in 14 of 19 nations surveyed feel their government's efforts to address the economic crisis do not go far enough. Three additional publics lean to this view. Most publics favor government support for troubled companies and a global body that would monitor large financial institutions. Full release.

Researchers have uncovered the first cases in which HIV almost certainly was transmitted from mothers other caregivers to children through pre-chewed food. The source of HIV in the pre-chewed food was most likely the infected blood in the saliva of the people who pre-chewed the food before giving it to the children. The researchers said their findings suggest that HIV-infected mothers or other caregivers should be warned against giving infants pre-chewed food and directed toward safer feeding options. Franklin Joseph Ryle Jr., a former Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper, pleaded guilty on July 20, 2009, in federal court in Wyoming to depriving a man of his constitutional right to be free from unreasonable seizures by kidnapping him. Ryle also pleaded guilty to one count of using his firearm in relation to the crime. Full release.

Roll Call Group today announced it has agreed to acquire Congressional Quarterly from the Times Publishing Company. Exactly 23 years after he was subjected to a crude form of waterboarding, suffocation, and a mock execution during a sadistic three-day interrogation by subordinates of indicted former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge, Michael Tillman will file a petition in Cook County Circuit Court Tuesday seeking a new trial in connection with his wrongful murder conviction. As healthcare reform becomes an increasing national priority, the American Psychological Association (APA) and YMCA of the USA announced a partnership that provides strategies to help families improve their overall well-being and physical health, and advocates for a comprehensive healthcare system that has a strong approach to chronic disease prevention. The partnership will specifically address the impact individual behaviors such as eating healthy and increasing physical activity can have in reducing risk factors for chronic diseases. American Jewish World Service (AJWS) President Ruth W. Messinger has been appointed to serve on the Obama administration's Task Force on Global Poverty and Development. The task force was created by the President's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, which is working to identify areas in which improved, expanded and innovative partnerships between government and faith-based community organizations will yield results in serving individuals, families and communities.
