July 13, 2009 July 13, 2009Today the National Legal and Policy Center released a letter to members of Congress responding to a letter from a Google front group called the Open Internet Coalition (OIC). The June 29th letter from the OIC raised concerns about the use of new technologies like deep packet inspection which the group argued could be used by governments to "spy on Internet communications, censor speech and prevent grassroots democratic activism and free expression." The letter called for Congressional hearings on the deployment of such technologies. Full release. Posted by

Next week, the Center for Reproductive Rights will release the results of an investigation of abortion clinics in six states demonstrating that attacks, harassment, discriminatory legal restrictions and stigma are causing a shortage of abortion facilities and providers, severely limiting women's reproductive rights. The report will be released at a briefing for members of Congress, staff and media on Wednesday, July 22, at 12:30 p.m. in room HC-8 of the U.S. Capitol. Full release. Posted by

After reaching a nearly 50-year low in 2008, the number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty jumped 20 percent during the first six months of 2009. Still, officer fatalities in the United States remain low when compared with mid-year totals in recent history, according to a new report from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.).
