Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins released the following statement in response to a lawsuit filed today by Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley challenging the constitutionality of the federal definition of marriage established by Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). In 1996 DOMA was passed overwhelmingly in the House (342-67) and Senate (85-14) and then was quickly signed into law by President Bill Clinton. Full release.

A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today cited recent anti-Muslim incidents nationwide in calling on American leaders to address what it said is a "growing level of anti-Muslim prejudice and stereotyping" in American society. Full release.

What is believed to be the largest dog fighting operation in U.S. history was raided early Wednesday in an effort that included federal and state agencies, with the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) assisting. Full release.

This morning, 11 daring Greenpeace climbers hung a banner on Mount Rushmore challenging President Obama to show real leadership on global warming. The banner, measuring sixty-five feet high by thirty-five feet wide, features an unfinished portrait of Obama with the message, "America honors leaders not politicians: Stop Global Warming." The demonstration comes as President Obama meets other G8 leaders in L'Aquila, Italy today to discuss the global warming crisis in the lead-up to UN climate treaty negotiations in Copenhagen this December. n analysis of campaign finance data by Public Campaign Action Fund, a national campaign finance watchdog group, found that members on the House Financial Services Committee have received $62.9 million in campaign donations from financial, insurance, and real estate interests. The data, which was compiled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, covers lifetime campaign contributions received by the 71 members on the committee. Full release.

Today the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria announced its latest prevention and treatment numbers, noting in particular that Global Fund-financed programs have put 2.3 million people on treatment for HIV/AIDS, 5.4 million people have been treated for tuberculosis, and 88 million insecticide-treated nets have been distributed to prevent malaria infection. In addition, more than 500,000 HIV-positive pregnant women have been treated to prevent their babies from being born with HIV. Over the past year, the number of people accessing ARVs through Global Fund-financed programs has increased by 31%, the number given tuberculosis drugs has increased by 38% and the number of nets distributed has increased by 49%.
