July 01, 2009 July 1, 2009In the wake of yesterday's unexpected Pentagon announcement about gays in the military, experts say the "don't ask, don't tell" policy may be on the brink of irreversible change that would speed up its demise. After speaking with President Obama last week, Defense Secretary Robert Gates has asked military lawyers to explore how to modify enforcement of the policy in ways that are "more flexible until the law is changed." The mother of an autistic child joined Consumer Watchdog and its attorneys today to announce a lawsuit against the California Department of Managed Health Care ("DMHC"), the Schwarzenegger Administration agency responsible for regulating many of California's health insurers. The suit alleges that the DMHC has wrongfully allowed insurance companies to refuse to pay for autism treatments, resulting in the denial of critically needed, medically necessary treatment for autistic children. Today the Employment Policies Institute (EPI) released a new study which shows that the widely employed estimate of 47 million uninsured Americans is a misleading representation of the problem. The study, authored by Drs. June and David O'Neill of Baruch College and City University of New York, shows that more than 43 percent, or 16 million, of uninsured Americans ages 18-64 could likely afford health coverage and are actually "voluntarily uninsured." Attorney General Eric Holder announced today the appointment of Brian M. O'Leary as the Executive Office for Immigration Review's (EOIR) Chief Immigration Judge. Prior to his appointment, Judge O'Leary served as an immigration judge from May 2007 to June 2009 at the Arlington, Va., Immigration Court. He served as a temporary board member on the Board of Immigration Appeals from May 2006 to May 2007 and as a deputy chief immigration judge in the Office of the Chief Immigration Judge from March 2003 to May 2006. Most Pakistanis now see the Pakistani Taliban as well as al Qaeda as a critical threat to the country -- a major shift from 18 months ago -- and support the government and army in their fight in the Swat Valley against the Pakistani Taliban.
