June 02, 2009 June 2, 2009The legislative session in Texas ended without enacting a dangerous bill that would have forced the carrying of hidden and loaded guns at universities and colleges. Students and gun violence prevention advocates were ecstatic for the initial victory and that college campuses would remain safe from the gun lobby's threats. But advocates cautioned that the gun lobby would not stop pushing its deadly legislation and called on lawmakers to protect universities from being run over by the NRA's radical agenda. Full release. Amnesty International today urgently demanded that Mexican authorities step up protection around well-known human rights activist and journalist Lydia Cacho Ribeiro, whose home and offices in Cancun are being regularly photographed and watched by an armed man while her life has been threatened in online messages. The human rights organization said it fears for her life and called on Mexican authorities to guarantee her safety. Not On Our Watch, the international advocacy and aid organization founded by actors George Clooney, Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, producer Jerry Weintraub and human rights lawyer David Pressman, has awarded the U.S. Fund for UNICEF a grant of $438,000 to assist at-risk Zimbabwean refugee children living on the South Africa-Zimbabwe border.
