May 13, 2009 May 13, 2009Amnesty International today urged the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to act on the International Violence Against Women Act to demonstrate that it is serious about preventing and punishing mass rape during war. Amnesty International is urging President Barack Obama to speak out against the indiscriminate killing of civilians in the current conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The human rights organization has also urged United Nations Security Council members to discuss the latest disturbing developments in the country and establish a Commission of Inquiry into violations of international law that have taken place during the violence. The European Commission today ruled that Intel abused its dominance in the x86 microprocessor market and imposed a fine of 1.06 billion euros. Association for Competitive Technology (ACT) president Jonathan Zuck offered the following comments in response: "The European Commission's efforts to manipulate competition in the technology industry without identifying actual consumer harm are worrying. The following is a statement from Grant Aldonas: "This is a potentially costly ruling for both the United States and Europe. It could lead to higher computer prices, which will hinder investment in information technology, making both economic recovery and improvements in our long-term competitiveness more difficult. Given the implications for R&D that drives Intel's investment in both Europe and the United States, it makes little sense to divert these funds to the European Union's coffers instead. If the United States wants to remain competitive, it is vital that it not follow this European model of punishing companies for the simple reason that they are more successful than their competitors."
