April 22, 2009Americans United for Life (AUL) today held a Capitol Hill briefing in conjunction with the release of their annually-updated legal guide, Defending Life 2009: A State-by-State Legal Guide to Abortion, Bioethics, and the End of Life. Full release.

Lev L. Dassin, the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Michele M. Leonhart, the Acting Administrator of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), announced that Geraldo Quintana-Perez, a/k/a "El Viejo," a/k/a "German Quintero," and Harvey Steven Perez, a/k/a "Miguel," arrived in the Southern District of New York from Sierra Leone today to face charges of conspiring to import cocaine into the United States. The defendants, who had been in custody in Sierra Leone on Sierra Leonean charges, were transferred by the government of Sierra Leone to the custody of the United States to face narcotics trafficking charges in this country. This marks the first defendant transfer ever by the government of Sierra Leone to the United States. Full release.
The conference Melting Ice: Regional Dramas, Global Wake-Up Call takes place on April 28, the day before the Arctic Council's annual ministerial meeting on April 29. A number of foreign ministers from the Arctic Council states and several observer states are expected to attend. The Arctic Council states are the United States, Russia, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway.
