Today, two Sikh military recruits called on the U.S. Army to end its religious ban and to fully integrate the Army. The two men, both medical professionals in the Army, are being told that they must remove their turbans and cut their unshorn hair and beards - all mandatory articles of the Sikh faith - when they report for active duty in July. The federal tax code has become increasingly unfair over the past 30 years, giving wealthy individuals more breaks than middle- and low-income Americans, according to a new report released today by the Campaign for America's Future. The report shows that the tax rates on the top 1 percent dropped significantly since 1980, while the relative tax burden on the middle 60 percent has increased. Full release.

Today, the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) published the "Business Tax Index 2009: Best to Worst State Tax Systems for Entrepreneurship and Small Business," which ranks the 50 states and District of Columbia according to the costs of their tax systems for entrepreneurship and small business. According to the nation's leading organization advocating for entrepreneurs, elected officials in the states need to pay careful attention to their state's competitive position regarding taxes, particularly given the dismal state of the nation's economy. Tim Kaine, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, issued the following statement after a three judge panel in Minnesota declared Democrat Al Franken the winner of the contested Senate race in Minnesota. Former Senator Norm Coleman challenged the result of the election after losing to Franken by a 225 vote margin. As a result of Coleman's challenge, Franken's lead grew to 312 votes and a three judge panel said tonight that Franken leads the contest and is entitled to an election certificate. Full release.
