A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today called for the immediate release of a Florida Muslim arrested yesterday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) even though he was recently acquitted of federal charges. The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) held a news conference this morning in Tampa to call for the release of Youssef Megahed, a former University of South Florida student who was found not guilty of explosives charges on Friday. Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins today condemned the vote of the Vermont State Legislature to overturn the Governor's veto on same-sex "marriage" as well as the vote by the District of Columbia City Council to recognize same-sex marriages performed in the 50 states. The Vermont legislature, in an historic vote, has overridden a veto by the state's governor to grant full marriage equality to lesbian and gay couples. The veto override, which was approved by both the state House and Senate earlier today, makes Vermont the first state in the country to successfully implement full marriage recognition for same-sex couples through a legislative vote. In 2000, Vermont granted recognition to same-sex couples under a statewide civil unions law. Marriage will now become legal in the state on September 1st. Full release. Posted by

Properties owned by the unions of Workers United, purchased with the dues money of generations of garment industry workers, are threatened in court today as part of an attempted hostile seizure of assets by their former union. Buildings in cities including New York, Chicago and Knoxville, Tennessee, have been owned for decades by the unions which have recently left UNITE HERE and formed their own union, Workers United. The workers who are rallying today at the Southern District of New York courthouse are outraged that UNITE HERE President, Hospitality Industry John Wilhelm has filed for a preliminary injunction against Workers United affiliates demanding that these workers turn over all of their assets to his union.
