Consumer advocates said that federal law enforcement agencies should create a special investigative unit dedicated to unearthing any fraud or misconduct attributable to AIG employees paid bonuses since taxpayers bailed out the company. The nonpartisan, nonprofit Consumer Watchdog said that AIG executives and employees who claim a "contractual right" to a bonus should be subject to the strictest scrutiny by the FBI and Department of Justice. United States Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship Chair Mary Landrieu, D-La., and Ranking Member Olympia J. Snowe, R-Maine, today commented on President Barack Obama's ambitious new plan to increase access to capital for small businesses. Chair Landrieu and Ranking Member Snowe joined Congressional lawmakers, business leaders and community bankers in a meeting with the President this morning to discuss the plan, which will take immediate steps to unlock frozen credit markets, temporarily roll back lending fees and bolster bank liquidity to ensure small firms can have continued access to credit. The Coalition for a Democratic Workplace (CDW) is launching an advertising campaign on the card check issue this week that coincides with the 20th anniversary of the United States Justice Department ordering the Teamsters to allow its members to vote for their leaders by secret ballot. On December 12, 2006, Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel raided six meatpacking plants owned by Swift & Co. in the largest immigration enforcement action in U.S. history. The plants are located in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Texas, Colorado and Utah. A new report from the Center for Immigration Studies examines the raids and their aftermath. It notes the historical context of an industry whose workers have seen a dramatic decline in wages over the past 30 years as well as the raids' economic effects.
