Gil Kerlikowske is the Administration's choice to serve as the Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). In doing so, he emphasized the role Drug Court will play in the nation's drug control strategy. Full release
Travel industry leaders met today with President Obama to discuss the unique role that travel can play in strengthening the American economy. The meeting focused on two critical areas: the need to welcome more international visitors and the business community's concerns about the dramatic nationwide downturn in meetings and events. The Dallas Regional Chamber is actively urging the Texas Congressional delegation to oppose the so called Employee Free Choice Act, known as the "Card Check Bill," just introduced Tuesday in Congress. Chamber chairman, Bob Best said, "Our executive committee and board have passed resolutions to oppose this piece of legislation because it will curtail the rights of both employees and employers to have a fair process regarding a decision to unionize companies, plants and facilities of all sizes. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights will hold a briefing on Friday, March 20, 2009 to examine civil rights issues with respect to the mortgage crisis. Three panels of experts will address topics including the Community Reinvestment Act, predatory lending, and HUD lending goals for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as they relate to civil rights. Building upon the successes of earlier efforts, the U.S. Department of Justice today announced the opening in Bangkok of a regional conference of approximately 100 key law enforcement and industry officials from more than a dozen nations with the goal of strengthening international cooperation in fighting large-scale intellectual property crimes. The Justice Department organized the gathering with the assistance of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the U.S. Department of State. Justice Department prosecutors will be joined at the conference by officials from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Full release.
Human rights activists in the Middle East and North Africa still face imprisonment, torture, persecution and repression for seeking to uphold the rights of others, more than ten years after the United Nations (U.N.) called on all states to support the work of people defending human rights, Amnesty International said in a new report, Challenging Repression. Nine "green" projects, programs and initiatives undertaken by California state agencies, cities and counties will be honored at the upcoming Green California Summit & Exposition (Sacramento Convention Center, March 16 - 18). Late yesterday the U.S. Senate voted to pass H.R. 1105, the Omnibus Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2009. The bill, passed by the House of Representatives last week, contains an appropriation of $900 million for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Full release.
