The Dallas Regional Chamber is actively urging the Texas Congressional delegation to oppose the so called Employee Free Choice Act, known as the "Card Check Bill," just introduced Tuesday in Congress. Chamber chairman, Bob Best said, "Our executive committee and board have passed resolutions to oppose this piece of legislation because it will curtail the rights of both employees and employers to have a fair process regarding a decision to unionize companies, plants and facilities of all sizes. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights will hold a briefing on Friday, March 20, 2009 to examine civil rights issues with respect to the mortgage crisis. Three panels of experts will address topics including the Community Reinvestment Act, predatory lending, and HUD lending goals for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as they relate to civil rights. Building upon the successes of earlier efforts, the U.S. Department of Justice today announced the opening in Bangkok of a regional conference of approximately 100 key law enforcement and industry officials from more than a dozen nations with the goal of strengthening international cooperation in fighting large-scale intellectual property crimes. The Justice Department organized the gathering with the assistance of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the U.S. Department of State. Late yesterday the U.S. Senate voted to pass H.R. 1105, the Omnibus Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2009. The bill, passed by the House of Representatives last week, contains an appropriation of $900 million for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Full release. Posted by
