January 28, 2009 January 28, 2009The mayor of Gulfport, Miss., and his wife were arrested today following an indictment returned by a federal grand jury that alleges conspiracy, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) fraud, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) home grant fraud and insurance fraud, all arising from claims made following Hurricane Katrina, announced U.S. Attorney Dunn Lampton of the Southern District of Mississippi; Richard Skinner, Inspector General for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS); Kenneth Donohue, Inspector General for HUD; and Stacey Pickering, Auditor for the State of Mississippi. President Obama has not offered any plans to stop Bush Administration policies that will allow Fortune 500 firms and some of the largest companies in Europe to continue to receive hundreds of billions of dollars in federal small business contracts through the year 2012. In June of 2007, former Administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA) Steven Preston ignored recommendations from the SBA's own Office of Inspector General (OIG) and adopted a policy that will allow Fortune 500 firms and thousands of other large businesses to continue to receive federal small business contracts until 2012. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller, and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro held a media availability in the Capitol late this afternoon following House passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to end pay discrimination. The House approved the measure late this afternoon by a vote of 250 to 177. The bill will now be sent to President Obama, who will sign it into law later this week.
