The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today thanked CBS for last night's "60 Minutes" program that outlined in detail the injustices suffered by the Palestinian people at the hands of the Israelis. The 13-minute report by journalist Bob Simon showed the damage to the cause of peace caused by the ever-expanding and illegal Israeli settlements, the evictions of Palestinians from their homes, the humiliation they experience at Israeli checkpoints, the "Apartheid" roads and wall built by Israel, and the bizarre experience of Palestinian families imprisoned in their own homes by Israeli soldiers. Today, the Pew Environment Group applauded President Obama's decision to instruct the Environmental Protection Agency to review California's waiver to regulate automobile tailpipe emissions and for the Transportation Department to issue guidelines that will ensure the nation's auto fleet reaches an average fuel efficiency of at least 35 miles per gallon by 2020, if not earlier. U.S. Senator Susan Collins today announced that she will oppose the confirmation of Timothy Geithner, who was nominated to be U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. The Senate is expected to vote on the confirmation tonight circa 6:00 p.m. Senator Collins placed this statement in the Senate Record: Mr. President, I rise today to state my opposition to the confirmation of Timothy Geithner to be Treasury Secretary. Our current economic crisis is, in part, a crisis of confidence. If we are to return to prosperity, the American people must have confidence in those who would chart our course. The following was released today by the Republican National Committee: Goldman Sachs Economist Alec Phillips Said Preliminary Estimates Show That Only $250 Billion Of The $825 Billion Stimulus Will Make It Into The Economy In 2009. "'As the size of the overall package grows, estimates of the amount of stimulus Congress will provide appear to be shrinking,' said Goldman Sachs economist Alec Phillips. 'Preliminary estimates imply that of the $825 billion Congress is considering, only $250 billion will make it into the economy in the current calendar year.'" The recently released list of top 100 companies by Fortune magazine shows that employee owned companies in the U.S. are becoming more prominent. Approximately 14% of the companies on the 2009 list are employee owned. According to Fortune, a company has to be at least seven years old and have more than 1,000 U.S. employees to be eligible. Fortune conducts an extensive survey of employees to name the top 100 companies. Full release Posted by

On Monday, January 26, 2009, six human rights advocates will begin federal trials for carrying the protest against the School of the Americas onto the Fort Benning military base in Georgia. This school, re-named the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, is a controversial U.S. Army training school for Latin American soldiers. Each person faces up to six months in prison and a $5,000 fine for this act of nonviolent civil disobedience. Full release Posted by
