The higher education tax credit proposed by Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) has been embraced in the $825 billion economic stimulus package unveiled this morning by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi."The House inclusion of our plan for a refundable higher education credit is a giant step toward our goal of college access for millions of young people with limited means to pursue their dreams," Congressman Fattah said. The Coca-Cola Company has been served notice a class action lawsuit filed (http://cspinet.org/new/pdf/vitaminwater_filed_complaint.pdf)over what the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) says are deceptive and unsubstantiated claims on its VitaminWater line of beverages.Coke markets VitaminWater as a healthful alternative to soda by labeling its several flavors with such health buzz words as "defense," "rescue," "energy," and "endurance." The company makes a wide range of dramatic claims, including that its drinks variously reduce the risk of chronic disease, reduce the risk of eye disease, promote healthy joints, and support optimal immune function. The overreaching secrecy provisions of a whistleblower law prevent the public from learning about serious allegations of fraud against the United States government, according to a complaint filed today by the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Virginia on behalf of themselves, the Government Accountability Project (GAP) and OMB Watch. The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $6 million grant to the state of California to fund approximately 353 temporary jobs to assist with continued cleanup efforts following the 2008 Southern California wildfires.
