Republican National Committee Chairman Robert M. "Mike" Duncan released the following statement today regarding Al Franken's latest attempt to be seated in the U.S. Senate without an election certificate. "Al Franken's outrageous attempt to seat himself in the U.S. Senate without an election certificate is an insult to Minnesotans and all those who believe in the rule of law. While Franken has unfairly been the beneficiary of double-counted votes, 'missing' ballots, and inconsistent standards regarding absentee ballots, he's clearly concerned he will lose his artificial lead as this process moves forward." The following is an excerpt from an article in The New York Times, and is being released today by the Republican National Committee: After the presidential election, the Republican National Committee filed a lawsuit that could drive a stake through the heart of the campaign finance system. It challenges the constitutionality of the McCain-Feingold law's ban on "soft money" contributions. ... There is no denying that the campaign finance system is badly broken. One of Mr. Obama's top priorities should be fixing the system's flaws, including the core problem that it does not provide enough money for a strong presidential campaign in modern times. ... As a result of this, which I have detailed below, I am in a position to bring much to the people and State of New York. At the urging of my supporters, I would like to ask you, with humility, to be considered for the position of Senator of New York." Full release

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D - CA) is leading congressional support for a new loophole in federal contracting law that will allow some of the wealthiest venture capitalists in America to receive federal contracts set-aside for small businesses. The new loophole could divert billions of dollars in federal small business contracts away from middle class firms and into the hands of wealthy investors. If Congress does adopt legislation that allows venture capitalists to participate in federal small business contracting programs, thousands of middle class jobs could be lost as legitimate small businesses struggle to compete head-to-head with firms owned and controlled by billionaire investors.
