December 18, 2008 December 18, 2008Four leading civil liberties and human rights organizations today urged President-elect Obama to implement "an unqualified return to America's established system of justice for detaining and prosecuting suspects" when he fulfills his pledge to shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison camp and military commissions. In a letter delivered to the presidential transition team, the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International USA, Human Rights First and Human Rights Watch state that they "categorically oppose the creation of any other ad-hoc illegal detention system or 'third way' that permits the executive branch to suspend due process and hold suspected terrorists without charge or trial, essentially moving Guantanamo on-shore." Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the latest economic news that 554,000 Americans filed for jobless claims: "Today's jobless claims again illustrate the struggles that workers are facing as they search for jobs, worry about layoffs, or fight to make ends meet. It is critical that Democrats and Republicans work together to ensure that the new year is a time of new economic opportunities for all Americans. Congress is working with the incoming Obama Administration to pass at the earliest date an economic recovery plan to provide immediate relief to Americans, to create or save 2.5 million American jobs, and to make long-term investments to strengthen the economy." On Monday, January 12th, 2009 Matt Dillon and Sarah Jessica Parker will join Refugees International to host a one-night only performance of the critically acclaimed George Packer play, Betrayed, at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater. The play follows the stories of three young Iraqi translators as they risk their lives for Americans in Iraq. The production, and the article in The New Yorker it was based on, drew national attention to the Iraqi refugee crisis. Former presidential candidate Gary Bauer called Paul M. Weyrich a "larger than life figure in the conservative movement" and made the following statement Thursday on his passing. Bauer, the president of American Values and chairman of the Campaign for Working Families said: "My heart broke today when I heard of the passing of Paul Weyrich. The conservative movement lost a great strategist. America lost a great patriot, and I've lost a great friend. Americans United for Life (AUL) applauds today's Illinois Supreme Court ruling in Morr-Fitz v. Blagojevich that individual pharmacists and pharmacy owners do have legal standing to challenge a rule requiring them to dispense Plan B, which abortion activists call "emergency contraception," regardless of their religious, moral, or conscientious beliefs. Considering the dire state of our nation's economy, President-elect Barack Obama was expected to support existing federal small business programs and propose new policies that would stimulate the middle class economy and create jobs for our nation's 27 million small businesses. As mortgage giants Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae hurtled to financial ruin, their charitable foundations continued to pour money into homosexual causes. According to its records, the Freddie Mac Foundation gave over $125,000 to gay-activist groups since 2005. The Fannie Mae Foundation donated about $80,000 to these groups over the last decade. Their largest one-time gifts came in the last year -- just months before both companies collapsed and were taken over by the government. Full release. Posted by
