Daryl Lee Fierce, 69, of Charleston, W.Va., was indicted by a federal grand jury for using fire to intimidate and interfere with a person's housing rights because African-American and biracial individuals visited the person in her home. The indictment, which was unsealed today, also charges Fierce with using fire to commit a felony. Full release

Speaker Nancy Pelosi today issued the following statement in reaction to the latest economic news that 529,000 Americans filed for jobless claims last week, consumer spending declined by 1% in October and the number of Americans on food stamps could exceed 30 million for the first time. "The latest economic news makes clear that President Bush and Senate Republicans must drop their opposition to the House-passed economic recovery legislation that would provide a down payment on creating jobs, helping states avoid deep cuts to health care and essential services, and deliver emergency nutrition assistance to struggling families. Retired General Merrill McPeak, a former member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and an adviser to Barrack Obama's campaign, has acknowledged that his views on women in the military have been rooted in personal, unsubstantiated beliefs, which he held even when they conflicted with the needs of the military. As the Palm Center's Dr. Nathaniel Frank discusses in today's New Republic, McPeak's personal support for the current ban on openly gay troops conflicts with Obama's desire to repeal that policy. More than 1,000 people gathered tonight in Sacramento's Memorial Auditorium to celebrate Oak Park native Kevin Johnson's resounding victory in the mayoral race over his Democratic rival Heather Fargo. The evening of song, dance, and speeches was highlighted by an ebullient and energetic Johnson who laid out his vision of a city that works better, is safer, and is more accountable to its citizens. Johnson, perhaps the most famous native of Sacramento, reiterated his theme of "Together We Can" many times as he called upon citizens to become more involved in their communities. Full release.
