Consumer Watchdog said the health insurance industry's support today of national health care reform on the condition that it includes a requirement that every American buy insurance coverage - the so called "individual mandate" - is self-serving. The proposal amounts only to a customer delivery system for the fragmented, wasteful private insurance market. It will not solve America's health care problems and will only encourage the industry to charge higher premiums and demand more taxpayer subsidies while providing less health care. Full release

Pointing to the combined impact of the health care and economic crises on the lives of working families nationwide, SEIU International President Andy Stern called on President-Elect Barack Obama and key leaders in Washington today to work together to address the nation's ailing health care system in the short-term. "Working people in this country are living in fear. Fear of losing their jobs and their health care. Fear of being just one illness away from financial ruin," said Stern in his testimony today before the Senate Committee on Finance led by Senators Max Baucus (D-MT) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA). "If we're going to revive our economy -- if we're going to restore a sense of economic security to ordinary American families -- we have to fix health care." Full release

Former presidential candidate Gary Bauer expressed "disappointment" on Wednesday "that fire was aimed at fellow Republicans" in Governor Huckabee's pro-election book. The chairman of the Campaign for Working Families made the following statement: "As a former candidate myself for the GOP Presidential nomination in 2000, I understand the disappointment Governor Huckabee must feel about his failure to win the GOP Presidential nomination in 2008. It is unfortunate, however, at a time when the GOP needs to close ranks and seek unity, that Governor Huckabee in his new book has aimed his fire at his fellow Republicans." Full release
