Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on deteriorating economic news, including a steep rise in foreclosures and increased number of Americans filing for jobless claims: "America's working families are facing worsening economic conditions. The number of homeowners receiving foreclosure notices increased 25 percent from a year ago and the number of newly laid-off Americans filing for jobless benefits is at a seven-year high. A new poll taken as Americans went to vote last week finds that parents put balancing work and family on a par with the economic downturn as the sources of their greatest day-to-day worries. The poll also found that 63 percent of registered voters - whether they were parents or not - were more likely to support a candidate they thought would help parents balance work and family with policies such as fair pay, healthcare and paid sick time. Myers President, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids: "Two new reports released today by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that the adult smoking rate in the United States has declined to under 20 percent for the first time, but smoking rates are not declining fast enough to reduce tobacco's growing toll in lives and health care costs. These reports confirm that we know how to reduce tobacco use, but elected officials at all levels must resist complacency and step up the fight against the nation's number one cause of preventable death. It is especially critical that the incoming Administration and Congress provide long-missing national leadership by enacting legislation granting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority over tobacco products. A Child Alone and Without Papers, released today by the Center for Public Policy Priorities (CPPP), reveals what happens to more than 43,000 undocumented, unaccompanied children removed annually from the United States and repatriated to their home countries. Policy analysis and interviews with adults and children in the system revealed the U.S. often compromises children's rights, safety, and well-being, contrary to international law and U.S. child welfare standards. The Republican National Committee (RNC) today announced it will file lawsuits in the District of Columbia and Louisiana challenging, respectively, the constitutionality of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act's ban on national parties raising and spending non-federal dollars, and the constitutionality of political party coordinated expenditure limits. The RNC does so to defend its interests as a national party committee with varied interests, including both state and federal elections, as well as redistricting and grassroots lobbying.
