Amnesty International Disappointed by Appeals Court Decision to Delay Release of Uighur Detainees
October 9, 2008Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International USA, issued the following statement regarding the continued legal wrangling about the status of the 17 Uighur detainees in Guantanamo Bay. On the evening of October 8, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit blocked the release of the Uighur detainees, which had been ordered by the lower District Court on October 7. The Court granted the U.S. government's emergency motion for a stay so that the U.S. government could file an appeal regarding the Uighur detainees' entry into the United States.
