Student government leaders from around the country this week pledged to start a grassroots healthcare reform movement at their colleges and universities. They made the pledge during a three-day conference in Nashville sponsored by SHOUTAmerica, a new non-partisan, non-profit group dedicated to engaging young people in the national dialogue on healthcare reform.

Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International USA, issued the following statement regarding the continued legal wrangling about the status of the 17 Uighur detainees in Guantanamo Bay. On the evening of October 8, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit blocked the release of the Uighur detainees, which had been ordered by the lower District Court on October 7. The Court granted the U.S. government's emergency motion for a stay so that the U.S. government could file an appeal regarding the Uighur detainees' entry into the United States.

Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) released today a damage assessment of 24 villages around the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali. It reveals that 424 structures -- including homes and offices -- sustained additional damage after the end of large-scale hostilities in South Ossetia on August 10, 2008. AIUSA and AAAS obtained the images from August 10 and August 19 through commercially available satellite imaging. The assessment is based on a comparative analysis of the two images. Full release

The following is a statement by Ray Schoenke, President, American Hunters and Shooters: Today, the National Rifle Association demonstrated once again that it is a partisan political entity, not an organization committed to the best interests of gun owners. In 2001, the NRA's magazine, America's First Freedom, said that John McCain was "one of the premier flag carriers for the enemies of the Second Amendment." That came after McCain introduced federal legislation on gun show background checks, which came after McCain's appearances in television ads supporting referenda in Colorado and Oregon to require backgrounds checks at gun shows. The NRA vehemently opposed those measures, which were passed by voters. Full release

The most recent friend update includes Barack Obama's notable association with Robert Blackwell Jr., a Chicago entrepreneur and fundraiser whose companies have benefited from Obama's urging Illinois officials to provide them with state funding grants.
