Today in Las Cruces, John McCain will face more questions about his out-of-touch comments in favor of renegotiating the 1922 Colorado River Compact, which set water-sharing guidelines among Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. McCain's comments are the latest example of how out of touch he is -- and reflect a profound disconnect with New Mexicans over the delicate nature of the compromise and its vital importance to the millions of Americans whose lives and livelihoods are affected by the compact. As President Bush begins another visit to a region devastated not only by a tremendous hurricane but an excruciatingly slow recovery process, the international humanitarian agency Oxfam America called on both presidential candidates to renew the federal government's commitment to rebuilding the region. As the Democrat and Republican Conventions get underway, the Alliance for Improving America's Infrastructure is calling on Senators Barack Obama and John McCain as well as Members of Congress to support a new economic stimulus package to provide funding for the country's crumbling highways, bridges and transportation systems, potentially creating 750,000 jobs throughout the country within 90 days. With the Federal Election Commission scheduled to address John McCain's decision to unilaterally withdraw from the federal matching funds program on Thursday, the Democratic National Committee today called on the Commission to remove that item from its agenda and instead proceed with a full investigation of the charges made against McCain in the administrative complaint filed by the DNC in February. In a conference call with reporters this morning, DNC General Counsel Joe Sandler discussed a letter he sent to the FEC last night that argued that the Commission should not consider McCain's decision to withdraw from the matching funds program because there is no request for permission pending and the Commission hasn't yet conducted an investigation as required by the law. Riki Ellison, President of the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance (http://www.missiledefenseadvocacy.org) reports that on a stunning summer day at 1130 a.m. this morning in Warsaw, Poland, the Republic of Poland signed an agreement with the United States of America to host 10 U.S. two-stage ground-based missile defense interceptors that will defend and protect NATO and the United States from long range ballistic missiles. MyGoodDeed.org, a prominent nonprofit consortium backed by virtually all of the major 9/11 family member and support organizations, today urged both Presidential candidates to respect the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks this year by temporarily suspending for the day all partisan campaign activities, including advertising with negative messages about their opponents.
