The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), have provided an initial $250,000 in emergency assistance for the people of Georgia in response to the crisis situation. This funding will be used for emergency relief supplies that can assist up to 10,000 people. In addition, the U.S. Embassy has released pre-positioned disaster packages in the capital of Tbilisi with emergency shelter items and medical supplies which include tents, blankets, bedding, hygiene items, clothing, beds, cots, and medical supplies. The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) and American Urban Radio Networks (AURN) have launched a nonpartisan radio campaign aimed at ensuring Americans register, verify their names on voter rolls and vote on Election Day. Full release

NATIONAL DEFENSE PAC (NDP) today announced its 2008 endorsement of Secretary of State Mike Coffman, a decorated Major in the U.S. Marine Corps who has served two combat tours in the Persian Gulf, for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from the 6th District of Colorado. Full release

Activists across the country will take part in a National Day of Action to protest the Exxon-McCain '08 campaign on Tuesday, August 12. Tomorrow's events are the cornerstone of a week of grassroots activism in as many as 18 states aimed at highlighting Exxon John's promise of four more years of gimmicks and giveaways that line Big Oil's pockets but do nothing to help Americans deal with skyrocketing energy costs. Defenders of democracy unite: Starz Edge and Starz Cinema present the world television premiere of Uncounted: The New Math of American Elections, an explosive documentary that shows how election fraud changed the outcome of the 2004 election and led to even greater fraud in 2006. With the 2008 presidential race just around the corner, is it too late for a free and fair election? The film will premiere on Starz Edge on Monday, August 25 at 10:30 p.m. (et/pt). The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) and the Obama for America Campaign today announced the themes for each night of the 2008 Convention. The Democratic National Convention will be held in Denver from August 25th through August 28th. Kansas Governor and Convention Co-Chair Kathleen Sebelius unveiled the themes on a conference today with reporters from across the country. Full release

As part of its commitment to throw open the doors to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) today announced that Americans from across the country will have the opportunity to have their questions answered live from the Convention floor through "America's Town Hall," an interactive dialogue designed to bring more people into the Convention. Speaking to reporters in Philadelphia and then on a conference call with reporters across the state, Governor Ed Rendell will call attention to Sen. McCain's record of supporting job-killing legislation and his inability to take this country in a new direction. The Governor will also discuss Senator Barack Obama's economic policy that aims to bring about a more fair economic system by creating and securing high-wage American jobs and ending tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas. This is the WashingtonWatch.com federal legislative update for the week of August 11, 2008. Congress continues its August recess and will not return to Washington for several weeks. Last week, Congress passed H.R. 4137, the College Opportunity and Affordability Act of 2007. The bill amends and extends the Higher Education Act of 1965. The President is expected to sign it.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) today launched new friend updates to its social networking Web site, http://www.BarackBook.com . The most recent updates include Barack Obama's associations with recently jailed Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick; Penny Pritzker, who serves as the Obama campaign's national finance chair and played a role in subprime lending that led to the fall of Superior Bank, leaving hundreds of clients without part of their savings; and ACORN, a voter-registration organization that has been accused of or implicated in voter-fraud schemes in numerous states. ACORN has endorsed Obama and pledged to spend $35 million registering voters this fall. Full release
