Jittery American workers were greeted with the news today that unemployment in July reached a four-year high of 5.7 percent and that the U.S. economy shed 51,000 jobs last month on the heels of the loss of 98,000 jobs in May and June. For all of 2008, the U.S. economy has lost 463,000 jobs. Speaker Nancy Pelosi today issued the following statement after the Department of Labor released its employment report for July showing a loss of 51,000 jobs, and an unemployment rate that climbed to 5.7 percent -- the highest since March 2004. The economy has lost 463,000 jobs in the past seven months: "Today's jobs numbers are another painful, and for too many, a very personal reminder of how the Bush Administration's economic strategy has failed American workers. A coalition representing millions of America's veterans today expressed outrage at a White House claim that Congress is overspending on veterans programs and has threatened to veto any of the remaining 11 spending bills that exceed the President's request unless Congress finds $2.9 billion in offsets elsewhere in the federal budget. Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement tonight after the House passed the Paycheck Fairness Act by a vote of 247 to 178. The bill closes loopholes that have allowed employers to avoid responsibility for discriminatory pay. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women continue to make only 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man. "Tonight, Congress sent a message to women across the country: 'your work is valued.'"
