The following was released today by the Republican National Committee: Democrat Leadership Supports Public Financing: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) Supports Public Financing. Sen. Reid: "And, as important as they are, these issues are certainly on the periphery of the big campaign finance issue - public financing. Members of our caucus have long-called for public financing of campaigns, the ultimate purging of private money from politics. If we are going to reexamine our campaign finance system, we need to approach that task comprehensively and in a bipartisan way." (Sen. Harry Reid, "Democrats Are Fighting For The Reform Americans Deserve," Press Release, 3/7/06) Full release Posted by

The following is being issued by the Republican National Committee: Sen. Clinton: "My understanding is that Senator Obama said he would (take public financing) and that now he's saying he won't ... Actions speak louder than words. No matter how beautiful the words are and how well presented, you've got to get beyond the words. And now we're seeing how the words don't even mean what we thought they meant. ... So I think it raises some serious questions about what it is he stands for."(Craig Gilbert, "Clinton Blasts Obama On Financing," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 2/17/08) Full release Posted by

John McCain held a town hall meeting with Latinos in Chicago, Illinois last night, but unlike all of his other town hall meetings, this one took place behind closed doors. One hundred pre-screened Latinos were bused in to Chicago for the meeting, but community leaders like Eluid Medina, who heads a neighborhood networking group, were kept out according to a news report. Medina told Diario Hoy that a conversation on the challenges Latinos face, "can't be partisan, the problems affect us all as a community and the meeting should have been open." Today, Barack Obama Announced He Will Opt Out Of The Public Financing System In The General Election: Obama Has Declined Public Financing In The General Election, Calling It A "Broken System." "In a web video emailed to supporters, Obama asks his supporters to help him 'declare our independence from a broken system.' Of course, it's not so much a broken system that explains why he's passing on the FEC's $80+million. He will easily raise more than he could ever get in public funding." John McCain believes that "America needs experienced leadership to...protect the American worker." Yet the facts show that when Senator McCain had the chance to stand up for workers in our country, he instead helped ship their jobs overseas. Senator McCain helped steer a tanker contract to a European company for which 7 of his campaign advisors and fundraisers then lobbied -- a bidding process the GAO, the investigative arm of Congress, is now saying was full of errors and recommended should be reopened. Likewise, when McCain had the chance to help American workers in the Senate, he instead voted against extending unemployment insurance and providing much-needed worker training.
