House Republican Whip Roy Blunt (Mo.) issued the following statement today referencing a recent Rasmussen poll showing that two-thirds of Americans support responsible deep-sea energy exploration, and applauding U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for announcing his intention to lift current bans on producing that American energy when he becomes president. Full release

Pre-K Now today released results of a national poll on voters' views of state and federal support for high-quality pre-kindergarten programs. The findings reveal broad support for making voluntary pre-k for all children a larger fiscal priority, and suggest that candidates' positions on the issue could influence many Americans' votes this fall. If state legislators are serious about saving taxpayer funds, they should support the Department of Public Welfare's plan to save $100 million a year by paying less for prescription drugs for children and families who receive health care through the Medicaid program, Secretary of Public Welfare Estelle B. On the same day John McCain is traveling to Houston to cave in to his friends in Big Oil, Senator McCain's campaign released a new ad intended to promote him as a champion of renewable energy. McCain is expected to call for more offshore drilling today--despite supporting a moratorium on drilling during his last presidential campaign. McCain will reverse himself on the need for a windfall profit tax for oil companies. While McCain said he was open to a tax on excessive oil company profits just six weeks ago, tonight he will tell industry executives he opposes one. Yet, despite his pattern of repeatedly voting against promoting green jobs and renewable energy technologies, McCain's new ad claims he will break our dependence on foreign oil by promoting renewable energy. Republican National Committee (RNC) Chief Counsel Sean Cairncross released the following statement today: "Having been thrown out of court just one month ago, the DNC now announces that it will once more file the same meritless lawsuit, again wasting judicial resources for its own political agenda. The American Islamic Congress announced today that it is joining with families of sailors killed in the USS Cole bombing to demand Yemen take responsible action against terrorists and protect the basic freedoms of journalists. Full release

During his campaign John McCain has tried to create distance from the Bush Administration by talking tough on the environment. But you just never know which John McCain you're going to get. Today, Senator McCain will cave to his friends in the oil and gas industries by declaring that he supports lifting the federal moratorium on drilling exploration, even though he supported the moratorium the last time he ran for president and has opposed drilling off the coast of places like Florida, North Carolina, Oregon, and Maine. The Democratic National Committee today announced that it will file a suit with the U.S. District Court in D.C. next week to compel the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to investigate John McCain's decision to unilaterally withdraw from the FEC's matching funds program despite using the program to financially benefit his campaign, which is clearly against the law. While John McCain talks about transparency and running a different kind of campaign, his actions and rhetoric clearly don't square as he continues to skirt FEC law. Full release

The following op-ed, written by Tom Walsh from Detroit Free Press, is being issued by the Republican National Committee: [D]isappointingly, but not surprisingly, Obama pandered in the Democratic Party primaries to labor unions and others in the party base who blame low-wage foreign countries for stealing American jobs. While John McCain likes to talk tough about energy independence and renewable energy, John McCain today will cave in to his friends in the oil and gas industry. Despite supporting a moratorium on off-shore drilling during his last presidential campaign and opposing offshore drilling in places like Florida, North Carolina and Oregon, Senator McCain will call for the elimination of the moratorium during his remarks in Houston today. McCain will talk about promoting renewable energy, despite a clear record of repeatedly voting against the renewable energy incentives he now claims to support. McCain will criticize "reckless speculators" who are driving up gas prices by "gaming the system," even though that speculation was allowed to take place because the "Enron loophole" his top economic advisor and campaign co-chair Phil Gramm forced through left energy trading markets virtually unregulated.
