Today Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Democratic Governors Association Chairman Joe Manchin came together with other Democratic leaders to discuss Democratic strength heading into the November election, and how Barack Obama and Democrats down the ticket will win because they offer a clear change in policies from the Bush Administration and John McCain. In response to Americans' growing worries about the quality of the nation's leadership, Harvard Kennedy School's Center for Public Leadership (CPL), in association with The Ken Blanchard Companies, recently convened a diverse group of more than 200 people to develop questions to help voters better evaluate the presidential candidates' leadership capabilities. Practically all Maryland voters believe that everyone in the state should have access to affordable, quality health care, according to a survey released today by AARP Maryland. In fact, 93 percent of Maryland voters agree with this principle, and this agreement persists across age, gender and party affiliation. Full release

A retired colonel in the U.S. Army pleaded guilty today for her role in a scheme aimed at influencing the award of a U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) contract at Camp Victory, Iraq in 2004 and 2005, Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division Thomas O. Barnett and Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division Matthew Friedrich announced today. Full release

John McCain says he will stand up for America's small businesses and that "[e]ntrepreneurs are at the heart of American innovation, growth and prosperity." But in reality as president Senator McCain's health care plan would overburden small businesses, hurting both the entrepreneurs running them and the workers needing coverage. According to FactCheck.org and the blog Think Progress, McCain's plan would "encourage some employers, mainly small businesses, to drop health benefits," it "could eventually eliminate job-based insurance altogether," and would "weaken small business protections." McCain's voting record backs this up -- in 2000, he actually voted against a tax credit for small businesses offering employee health insurance for low-income workers.
