A letter to Sen. Barbara Boxer by leading author and activist Bill McKibben and cosigned by the leader of Greenpeace USA says that the climate bill that failed today in the U.S. Senate would have come nowhere close to doing what scientists say is needed to halt global warming and stabilize carbon dioxide in the atmosphere at a safe level of 350 parts per million. Today, new economic indicators revealed the jobless claims reached a 22 year high, and that the American economy has lost jobs every month this year. It was the latest in a string of reports showing that too many Americans are losing their jobs, paying more for basic goods and services, earning less and struggling to keep their homes. Yet, in the face of months of worsening economic indicators, John McCain continues to echo President Bush's claim that the fundamentals of the American economy are strong in just about every public event. As recently as April, McCain even claimed that the American people are better off than they were eight years ago. Full release

John McCain says he is setting a "new standard for transparency and accountability" in politics. But a look at his new position on wiretapping, which is similar to the Bush Administration's, makes it clear McCain would not make transparency a priority in his administration. In a letter this week, one of McCain's top advisors wrote that Senator McCain thinks "President Bush's program of wiretapping without warrants was lawful," a position legal specialists said "contrasted with statements Mr. McCain previously made about the limits of presidential power." [New York Times, 6/6/08] Full release

Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain have declared Washington lobbyists persona non grata as far as participation in the forthcoming campaigns. The leadership of the American League of Lobbyists (ALL) vehemently objects to this treatment. ALL reminds the candidates that all U.S. citizens are guaranteed the right to petition the government under the First Amendment to the Constitution. Full release

As Democrats are joining together to reduce the influence of lobbyists on our political process, the Democratic National Committee today issued a new web ad highlighting Senator McCain's hypocrisy on lobbying reform and transparency. The new video, entitled "McCain's Lobbyist Friends," outlines the degree to which Senator McCain's inner circle has been dominated by the sort of Washington lobbyists he once railed against and the disturbing array of foreign clients they have represented --including companies doing business in Iran, the oppressive regime in Myanmar, and some of history's most brutal tyrants. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today formally endorsing the candidacy of U.S. Senator Barack Obama: "Over the past 16 months, tens of millions of Americans from all walks of life have been inspired to support Barack Obama's historic campaign for President, and with good reason: he is a once-in-a-generation leader who connects with the hopes and dreams of the American people and will deliver the long-overdue change that our country desperately needs. I could not be more excited to have Senator Obama lead a united Democratic Party to victory in November and I am committed to doing everything I can to help." Full release
