Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) today applauded a California State Supreme Court ruling in favor of full marriage equality for same-sex couples. The 4-3 decision, issued earlier today, follows lawsuits by fifteen couples who challenged the constitutionality of the state's marriage ban. The couples, along with Equality California and the Our Family Coalition, were represented by lead counsel from the National Center for Lesbian Rights along with counsel from Lambda Legal, the American Civil Liberties Union, Heller Ehrman LLP and the Law Office of David C. John McCain will say today that his "administration will set a new standard for transparency and accountability." Yet throughout his run for president, his own campaign has been anything but transparent and highlights just how hypocritical this promise is. His campaign's refusal to release Cindy McCain's tax returns, along with the news yesterday that her assets included investments in Sudan even as McCain was criticizing firms for doing business there, raises serious questions about what other information the McCains are trying to hide. During his remarks in Ohio this morning, Senator John McCain outlined a fictional account of what he expects the American people to believe he will do as president. In reality, on each of the issues he addresses, Senator McCain has either failed to outline any plans or has actually promised outdated ideas that would make the problem worse. Senator McCain's health care plan would do nothing to reduce the ranks of the uninsured, leave people with pre-existing medical conditions uninsured, and gut employer-based health benefits while raising taxes on families.
