Despite American setbacks in Iraq, Lebanon and Gaza, promoting democracy in the Arab world must remain a top U.S. foreign policy priority, argues a new Brookings Institution Press book. In Freedom's Unsteady March: America's Role in Building Arab Democracy, Brookings Senior Fellow Tamara Cofman Wittes shows why the Bush administration was right to try to advance freedom in the region -- and how they went about it in the wrong way. Dissecting the administration's failures, she lays out a smarter, more realistic long-term policy for democracy promotion in the Middle East. Full release Posted by

Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on Equal Pay Day, which marks how far into the year a woman must work, on average, to earn as much as a man earned the previous year: "This weekend, we cheered on Danica Patrick when she made history as the first woman to take home first prize winnings from an Indy Car race. And last year, for the first time in history, Wimbledon awarded equal prize money for its prestigious men and women's tennis tournaments. But a few breakthroughs for women in the world of sports are not nearly enough to rectify an inequity that puts women at severe economic risk." Full release Posted by

Today the Wall Street Journal details how disastrous John McCain's economic plans would be. Though he has proposed tax cuts that would either "cause the federal deficit to explode" or require huge cuts to critical programs like Social Security, he has yet to explain where those cuts would come from or how he would pay for his plan. Experts agree that McCain's numbers just don't add up. Heading towards November, McCain's failure to articulate a credible economic plan will no doubt hurt him with voters who don't want a third Bush term of disastrous economic policies that have hurt America. John McCain says that on his campaign tour this week he is visiting "places that have long been ignored or are losing ground as the global economy forces change" and that "[i]t's time for action" to help those communities. But in reality, John McCain has proven time and again that he would leave these communities behind by vetoing earmarks, which have funded critical programs in these economically struggling areas. In fact, during his visit to Youngstown, Ohio, today it remains to be seen if McCain will keep up his anti-earmark rhetoric considering that earmarks have funded essential initiatives and projects in Youngstown like improving education and health care and supporting an Air Reserve Center. One in three U.S. nonprofit organizations conducts no background checks on volunteers, and roughly one in eight does no screening at all, says a report released today by the National Center for Victims of Crime, the nation's leading advocacy group for crime victims. Although the majority of surveyed nonprofit human service organizations conduct some screening, most agencies that serve vulnerable populations could benefit from more thorough and comprehensive volunteer screening practices.
