Today John McCain, the ninth richest member of Congress, again showed the American people that his call for openness and accountability in government applies to everyone but himself. By only releasing two years of returns, he is the first nominee of either party since Ronald Reagan in 1980 to disclose that little information. And by failing to release his wife Cindy McCain's return, serious questions remain unanswered about how John McCain's position as a U.S. Senator may have benefited John and Cindy McCain's business ventures. Leading experts just back from Iraq joined with hundreds of constituents from across the country to raise the urgency of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region. A coalition of leading U.S. non-governmental organizations (see below) came together Monday to provide the latest on-the-ground perspective of the deepening humanitarian crisis in Iraq, especially in and around Basra, and described the best way forward from the crisis. Though he has admitted he doesn't understand economics, John McCain tried his hand at an economic proposal for our country this week. Now the reviews are in, and they're not very good. News accounts and expert analyses show McCain's proposals lack details, his numbers just don't add up, and he's the wrong choice for America's future. While the economy continues to slide, McCain is out of touch and offers a third Bush term of recycled economic policies that got us here in the first place. Full release

Tom Tancredo. Tancredo issued a press release yesterday attacking the "Pope's comments regarding U.S. immigration policy" and accusing his position of stemming from an interest in "recruiting new members."

John McCain has ramped up his fake-populist rhetoric recently, saying that helping the people who are struggling to pay their mortgages, fill their gas tanks, and put food on the table will be his "first priority in setting the economic policies of this nation." [johnmccain.com, accessed 4/17/08] Yet at the same time, McCain has said that some of the problems families are facing are "psychological." In fact, according to McCain himself, his proposal to suspend the gas tax this summer--one of the main focal points of his new economic plan--is nothing more than "a little psychological boost." [CNN Debate, 1/30/08; Your World with Neil Cavuto, 4/16/08] How can McCain possibly help the hard-working families struggling to make ends meet when he thinks their problems are just "psychological"?
