In concert with a global celebration of the social work profession this week, two U.S. Senators, who are also trained social workers, have introduced legislation that will help the nation's 600,000 professional social workers better serve families and communities in need. Young Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act -- to address a nationwide shortage of social workers. Full release

The following is a statement from Change to Win executive director Greg Tarpinian regarding presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain's economic proposals laid out yesterday in his speech at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. "For American voters, the American Dream is not about great wealth, it's about a good job with wages that support a family, access to affordable health care, a secure retirement, and the opportunity for a better future for our children. The economic proposals laid out by presidential candidate John McCain yesterday will do nothing to restore the American Dream for workers and their families."

Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today ahead of President Bush's expected announcement this afternoon of Administration efforts on climate change: "After seven years of denying the seriousness of the climate crisis and delaying tough action to save the planet, President Bush finally will discuss the subject this afternoon. With just nine months left in his term, the White House has already made clear that the President's announcement today will not reverse his record on global warming before he leaves office." John McCain says he "will not leave office without balancing the federal budget" and at times has said he would even balance the budget by the end of his first term. [johnmccain.com, accessed 4/15/08; AP, 2/15/08] But the truth is, McCain's economic proposals would balloon the deficit, not shrink it. McCain has actually proposed trillions of dollars in new spending --including financing a 100-year, $12-billion-per-month troop presence in Iraq and making President Bush's tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans permanent. But still no word on how he plans to pay for it. [New York Times, 4/15/08; DNC Research Document, Released 4/15/08; Senate Budget Committee Fact Sheet, 1/24/08] Full release

Obama Has Called For Higher Income Taxes, Social Security Taxes, Investment Taxes, And Corporate Taxes, As Well As "Massive New Domestic Spending." "Obama's transformation, if you go by his campaign so far, would mean higher income taxes, higher Social Security taxes, higher investment taxes, higher corporate taxes, massive new domestic spending, and a healthcare plan that perhaps could be the next step to a full-scale, single-payer system. Is that what most Americans want, someone who will fulfill a Democratic policy wish list?" (James Pethokoukis, "Barack Hussein Reagan? Ronald Wilson Obama?," U.S. News & World Report's "Capital Commerce" Blog, http://www.usnews.com, 2/12/08) Full release

Americans overwhelmingly want their next President to focus more on improving their standard of living, providing universal healthcare, and stemming the outsourcing of jobs overseas than making it easier for immigrants to live and work in the U.S., according to the latest "America At Work" national opinion survey by the non-partisan Employment Law Alliance (ELA).
