The following is a statement from Change to Win chair Anna Burger regarding U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's announced plans to delay a vote on the Colombia Free Trade Agreement. "Change to Win applauds Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for resisting strong-arm tactics by the White House and reasserting congressional authority over our nation's trade policies. The U.S. House should not bring the Colombia Free Trade Agreement to a vote this year. We need a new 'fair' trade model before any new trade agreements are considered." Full release

McCain's new "plan" to help America's middle class offers no new ideas and no real help. He again demonstrates how out of touch he is with Americans by proposing an investigation that has been going on for two months and unveiling a mortgage proposal similar to the one long-suggested by most Democrats and Republicans alike. The plan also represents a dramatic reversal from his old stance just last week that no government intervention was needed. McCain similarly proposes a plan to reduce gas prices that experts say won't reduce gas prices and a new worker training program with no details on how he will pay for it. Full release

John McCain says he "understands national security and the threats facing our nation." Yet at the same time, he has said he would keep our troops in Iraq for 100 years, despite the fact that key military and political experts believe our engagement in Iraq has not made America safer and has diverted critical resources from the real war on terror in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In fact, the same day Ambassador Ryan Crocker said that the most dangerous branch of al Qaeda is along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, not in Iraq; General Petraeus said that history will decide if the war in Iraq has made us safer. Other military leaders have made similar comments. [johnmccain.com, accessed 4/9/08; Politico.com, The Crypt blog, 4/8/08; ABCnews.com, 4/8/08] Full release
