Today, Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) Attacked Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) Character And Military Service: Sen. Rockefeller: "McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit. What happened when they [the missiles] get to the ground? He doesn't know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues." (Paul J. Nyden, "Jay Defends Endorsement Of Sen. Obama," The Charleston Gazette, 4/8/08) Full release

Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on testimony today of General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on the war in Iraq: "It is clear from today's testimony by General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker that the Iraqi government remains unwilling or unable to take the steps necessary to reach the political reconciliation needed to secure their country's future. With General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker testifying before Congress today and tomorrow, John McCain and his campaign continue to put politics ahead of a responsible way forward in Iraq. Instead of outlining his plan for the future, explaining whether his vision of a 100 year troop presence in Iraq includes permanent bases there, or saying how he plans to pay for a war that now costs $12 billion a month while making Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy permanent, McCain continues to advocate a stay the course strategy. Today, Obama claimed he has been accurately re-stating Sen. McCain's "100 years" comment: Obama Told The Today Show's Meredith Vieira That He Has Not Distorted Sen. McCain's Comments. Vieira: "Senator, both you and Senator Clinton have said Senator McCain favors 100 more years of war in Iraq. Sunday in The New York Times Frank Rich wrote, really, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton should be ashamed of themselves for libeling John McCain. He felt that the American troops should be a long-term presence, the way they were in Japan and South Korea. Are you willing to admit that you've distorted his statements?" Obama: "No. That's not accurate. We can pull up the quotes on You Tube." (NBC's "The Today Show," 4/8/08) Full release

John McCain has said we should listen to the generals on the ground in Iraq -- including General Petreaus -- who he calls "one of the greatest generals in American history." But in truth, McCain has refused to say if he agrees with General Petreaus' comment that "no one" believes "there has been sufficient progress by any means in the area of national reconciliation" and recently declared, "I don't care what anybody says. I've seen the facts on the ground." Instead, McCain talks about his willingness to keep our troops in Iraq for 100 years, even though he has failed to put forward any plan for the future of Iraq and refuses to explain how he will pay for the war that is now costing American taxpayers $12 million a month while making Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy permanent. The following editorial is being issued by the Republican National Committee. It is from The Wall Street Journal. As General David Petraeus briefs Congress this week on Iraq, it's clear his surge has achieved remarkable results. The most crucial is that the U.S. can no longer be defeated militarily in Iraq, which could not be said a year ago. The question now is whether Washington will squander these gains by withdrawing so quickly that we could still lose politically. Full release.
