Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel issued the following statement today on the announcement by President Bush that he will send the Colombia Free Trade Agreement to Congress tomorrow: "President Bush's statement today regarding his unprecedented decision to send a free trade agreement to Congress without following established protocols of Congressional consultation is counter-productive, jeopardizing prospects for its passage. Under present circumstances, we cannot support the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement. Full release

Today Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) called on the Bush Administration to protect taxpayer investments in government-backed small business loans and reinstate a program that uses lenders to recoup losses from defaulted loans. There is currently an estimated $404 million in fixed asset loans through the Small Business Administration's (SBA) 504 program in default. Yet the Bush Administration has failed to request $2 million to fund the program that reimburses 504 lenders for loan recovery costs and last Friday, the Bush Administration announced it intends to suspend the program. In advance of tomorrow's Congressional testimony by General David Petraeus, John McCain chose to launch more irresponsible political attacks instead of offering a real plan for the future in Iraq. Even though a majority of Americans want our troops to begin withdrawing and 89 percent of Americans think the cost of the war has contributed to the economic problems in our country, McCain today continued to follow the Bush Administration's pattern of cherry-picking the facts to justify a flawed, stay the course strategy. The following release is being issued by the Republican National Committee: Fiorina: "A year ago, John McCain starting calling for a substantial reform of unemployment insurance. And in addition to paying people while they are unemployed, he said we need to train people so that they compete, can compete in the 21st century for 21st century jobs. Had we done that a year ago, we would be in much better shape. Of course we need to help unemployed workers get back in the game.

On the campaign trail John McCain says he would cut spending in Washington because Americans are angry with the way politicians are spending their money. In reality, even though the American people are unhappy with the course of the war in Iraq and the condition of our economy, John McCain would continue President Bush's failed economic policies and stay the course in an unpopular war that is now costing American taxpayers $12 billion a month -- but hasn't explained how he would pay for it. The following is an op-ed by Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham and is being issued by the Republican National Committee: When Gen. David Petraeus testifies before Congress tomorrow, he will step into an American political landscape dramatically different from the one he faced when he last spoke on Capitol Hill seven months ago. Today, the Democratic National Committee announced the second in a series of McCain vs. McCain debates to be broadcast today on http://www.mccaindebates.com. The debates, which show Senator McCain debating himself, make it clear that even John McCain doesn't agree with John McCain on the vital issues confronting the American people. No matter which McCain the American people hear, they'll see a third-Bush-termer and pandering politician who will say or do anything to win and has no qualms selling out his principles for political purposes.
