Rep. Smith Urges Action After Charles Taylor's Escape
March 28, 2006"Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Africa, Global Human Rights and International Operations, today denounced the Nigerian government's failure to ensure the secure transfer of former Liberian President Charles Taylor. Smith said that the events surrounding Taylor's disappearance have enabled "a war criminal to escape from justice."
"There have been persistent questions about the level of security provided by the Nigerian government to ensure that Charles Taylor didn't have unchecked ability to travel," said Smith. "As a result a warlord with ties to Al-Qaeda and terrorism is now on the loose." [Read more]
