"The fact that the National Guard and Reserves are changing from a strategic reserve to more of an operational reserve in support of day-to-day missions around the world -- in addition to their unprecedented homeland security commitments and continuing disaster response roles -- is driving the need for the sweeping, in-depth assessment the Commission is charged to carry out. The work of the Commission is underway at a time when the operational tempo of the National Guard and Reserves has increased significantly: As of the end of October 2005, well over 46 percent of the 826,500 servicemen and women currently in the nation's Selected Reserve had been mobilized to active duty -- their highest mobilization rate since the Korean War." "While it is positive to see the residents of Louisiana returning to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras, there is still more work to be done to help homeowners and business owners rebuild six months after Hurricane Katrina," said Senator Kerry, Ranking Democrat on the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. "And for those still waiting for disaster loans, there's very little to celebrate. There are more than 65,000 homeowners and business owners throughout the Gulf Coast still waiting to receive their disaster loans, so they too can be part of the area's economic recovery. On top of this delay, the Administration's mismanagement nearly resulted in the program shutting its doors twice this month. Investing in homeowners and business owners and awarding local firms federal contracts is what we must do to get Louisiana and the whole Gulf Coast back on the road to recovery." "House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) released the following statement in response to the Commerce Department's report on Tuesday showing a GDP rate of 1.6 percent in the fourth quarter, faster growth than expected. "This economy is like a heavyweight boxing champ: strong, sturdy and still swinging. After fighting through a recession, terrorist attacks, and a devastating hurricane season, it's too bad that the economy still has to contend with Democratic naysayers who want to talk it down. Republican pro-jobs policies sparked this economic growth and provide proof that the tax relief needs to be permanent." [Read more] Posted by

"More than a year has passed since the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri. Rather than bringing domestic peace and stability, the departure of Syrian troops last April has been followed by a string of security incidents and assassinations of Damascus's opponents in Lebanon and has ushered in sectarian and political divisions within the country's ruling elite. The Saban Center for Middle East Policy at Brookings will host a discussion to examine the prospects and challenges for wholesale reform and state-rebuilding in Lebanon featuring Lebanese Member of Parliament Walid Jumblatt, a leader of the March 14 coalition and one of the most vocal critics of Syrian interference in Lebanon." While Wal-Mart's proposed changes to their health care plan are certainly long overdue, and we certainly support expanding benefits to part-timers, the Wal-Mart health care crisis infecting America cannot be solved by publicity stunts.
